(苏州高新区管委会(虎丘区人民政府)) | Updated : 2026-09-29

Soochow University inaugurated a new institute dedicated to museum studies on Sept. 22, bringing together universities, museums, cultural heritage institutions and local partners to advance professional training, academic research and technological innovation in the museum sector.
Established under the coordination of the Chinese Museums Association, the institute is jointly supported by the China Cultural Relics Exchange Center, Soochow University, Suzhou New District and the Beijing-based curatorial research center named in the initiative. Soochow University will oversee its day-to-day operations and integrate its development into the university’s broader plans for teaching, research and public engagement.
With museum studies at the core of its academic development, the institute plans to build related programs and degree offerings, gradually extending education across undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels. Museum collections, exhibitions and public programs will be incorporated into teaching, allowing students to gain practical experience while working with real-world materials and projects.
Suzhou New District, as one of the partners, will support the institute by drawing on the district’s strengths in digital culture and technological innovation. It will help facilitate joint research in digital museum technologies, provide internship and research opportunities, and promote collaboration with local cultural businesses, research institutions and museums.
The district also offers a range of cultural resources that could support practical learning and research. Suzhou Museum West holds more than 2,100 objects or sets of objects, while the China Embroidery Art Museum in Zhenhu sub-district traces 2,500 years of embroidery through historical works and contemporary examples of Suzhou embroidery.
By connecting academic education with museum collections, exhibitions, research and emerging technologies, the initiative seeks to develop a more practice-oriented approach to training museum professionals.
