As autumn brings crisp air and gentle sunshine, spending a little time outdoors can be a simple way to unwind. Research published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research suggests that spending around 20 minutes in a green space may help improve mood and well-being, even without exercise.
In Suzhou New District, visitors can find plenty of places to enjoy this nature break. Zhenshan Park in Tong’an Town was recently designated a suburban nature park by Suzhou, adding to its previous recognition as a countryside fitness park and its inclusion in the city’s park directory.
Covering 167,000 square meters, Zhenshan Park combines rolling hills, wetlands, lotus ponds and farmland. Rice, rapeseed and soybeans are grown in rotation, while a one-kilometer artificial wetland supports local plant and animal life.
The park has adopted a light-touch approach to development, balancing recreational facilities with ecological protection. Its five-kilometer trail network uses wooden paths, gravel and steel-grate boardwalks instead of extensive asphalt paving, helping minimize disturbance to soil, wetlands and vegetation. Two enclosed soccer pitches sit on the western lawn, while children's play areas and fitness facilities are integrated into selected woodland spots.
Aquatic plants help maintain water quality, and biological pest control is used in woodland management. Locally suitable trees, including camphor, poplar, bald cypress and ginkgo, have also been planted.
Beyond its trails, the park features six observation platforms and a distinctive 617-meter-long rest area known as the “Red Ribbon.” Visitors can admire lotus ponds, look out over farmland and wooded hills, or explore an educational trail through the artificial wetland. Seasonal activities include nature walks, educational outings and markets, with birdwatching, woodland walks and family tree-planting events planned for the future.
Located about 10 kilometers from downtown Suzhou, Zhenshan offers a convenient countryside escape for local residents and families seeking a weekend walk or outdoor relaxation.
It is one of several suburban nature parks across Suzhou New District. Gaojingshan Park features a two-kilometer “Red Trail” that combines forest walks with local revolutionary history. Wulongshan Park offers 5.5 kilometers of shaded woodland trails, wildlife information points and skyline views from Zhihui Pavilion. Shushan Park, a mountain-style nature park, has 7.8 kilometers of trails linking Yunquan Temple, cliffside carvings, tea gardens and pear orchards.
Together, these parks bring the district's hills, forests and waterways closer to urban residents. This autumn, a peaceful walk through the woods or a quiet pause beside a pond may be all it takes to slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with nature.
